Course Information

Description

Crime Scene and Forensic Photography is a 3-day course that provides extensive information and practical experience pertinent to crime scene and forensic photography of physical evidence. The course will begin with the basic settings and operations of a typical Digital SLR camera and proceed to advanced camera techniques and procedures to detect and photographically document a crime scene and all of its pertinent features. The course will also cover how to photographically document latent prints at the crime scene or upon various forms of physical evidence. Additional topics include: the proper selection and use of cameras, camera modes settings of Program, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority and Manual Exposure, Normal, Macro & Zoom lenses, f-stops, depth-of-field, shutter speeds, fill-flash, off-camera flash, macro close-up photography, fluorescent evidence photography, the four major vantage points of crime scene photography, the use of scales, tripods, filters, painting-with-light, simulated night-time photographic techniques, specialized lighting techniques, using LASERs for shooting scene reconstruction, high energy forensic lights, recommended photographic equipment, and the requirements to present digital photographic evidence in a court of law.

Instructor

Special Agent Mike Stapleton, M.A., retired after a career that spanned over 34 years with the FBI. As a Special Agent, Mr. Stapleton investigated an extensive range of matters that came under FBI jurisdiction such as the UNABOMBER (Ted Kaczynski) investigation, the Polly Klaas Kidnapping and Murder Investigation, and the Oklahoma City Federal Building Bombing. He is also a recognized fingerprint identification expert. Mike is an FBI Master Police Instructor and has taught crime scene investigation and forensic courses to thousands of law enforcement professionals over the last 45 years.

Requirements


Students are REQUIRED to bring their own personal or departmental digital cameras (preferably DSLR or Mirrorless cameras), lenses (normal, macro (micro), & zoom), owner’s manuals (original or PDF version), tripods, memory cards, electronic flash attachments, flashlights, extra batteries, battery chargers, camera manuals and photographic scales. Other items to bring but are not required are remote shutter release devices or applications, off-camera flash sync cords, lens filters, and if possible any other crime scene photographic equipment and supplies issued by their department for use at crime scenes. It is also highly recommended that each student familiarizes themselves with the operation and settings of their camera before the start of this course. *Students from the same department may share camera(s) when taking their assigned photos by swapping SD memory cards in and out of the camera.

We accept Visa and MasterCard (a non-refundable transaction fee of 2% will apply), cash, money order and cashier’s checks (made payable to SBRPSTC). Agency billing may also be arranged. Financial aid and VA benefits may be available.

*ALL FEES ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE. When possible, students will be advised of any fee changes prior to course start date. Tuition fee increases made at any time by the State Chancellor’s office may require collection of additional fees from students.

Students who have not lived in California for at least one (1) year and (1) day prior to start of college semester or do not meet other college criteria may be considered “out-of-state” students, and subject to additional fees to the ones listed above. Please check with our staff for details and exact costs.

Cancellation/Refund Policy

Out of consideration for students on waiting lists, cancellations must be made no later than 30 days prior to the first day of class. For cancellation deadlines, please refer to the Fee Information tab on this flyer. There may be a minimum cancellation fee of $50 assessed for material expenses associated with cancellations. Substitutions or transfer of your reservations to another student is permitted upon approval.

Course Cancellation by South Bay

Each class has a minimum enrollment requirement. If the minimum enrollment is not reached for the course three weeks prior to the beginning of the class, the class may be cancelled and any deposits/payments will be refunded in full (minus non-refundable processing fee).
