Advanced Latent Print Comparison & Identification

Description

This intensive five-day course is designed for students who desire to learn how to compare and identify partial latent prints to inked fingerprint and palm print impressions. The course will consist of lecture, demonstrations, and extensive hands-on practical comparison exercises. The student will be equipped with the essential skills and knowledge to: understand the basis for the science of absolute identification by friction ridge impressions; become familiar with the various friction ridge formations and ridge flows found on the fingers, thumbs, and palmer surface of the hand;  "roadmaps" to use to help locate and orient the latent print impression for comparison to the known impression; become proficient in taking legible inked fingerprint impressions, Major Case and Elimination Prints, essential verification protocols, note taking, and documentation matters; initially eliminate or include a suspect by fingerprints or palm prints; develop proficiency with the ACE-V Scientific Method to compare and identify partial friction ridge impressions; prepare fingerprint charts with Adobe Photoshop® to illustrate an identification to a jury; present expert testimony in a court of law; understand what juries want to see & hear from a latent fingerprint expert; develop a list of “qualification questions” and answers to use when testifying as an expert fingerprint witness in the future.

Instructors

Special Agent Mike Stapleton, M.A., recently retired after a career that spanned over 34 years with the FBI. As a Special Agent, Mr. Stapleton investigated an extensive range of matters that came under FBI jurisdiction such as the UNABOMBER (Ted Kaczynski), the Polly Klaas Kidnapping and Murder Investigation, and the Oklahoma City Federal Building Bombing.  He is a recognized fingerprint identification expert.  Mike is a FBI Master Police Instructor and  has taught fingerprint identification courses to thousands of law enforcement professionals over the last 35 years.

Prerequisite

Students must have successfully completed the 40 hour Basic Fingerprint Identification & Classification course or an equivalent recognized by the instructor.

Requirements

Students are REQUIRED to supply their own fingerprint magnifier.  Fingerprint ridge counters are also recommended but not required.

All classes require full payment or a designated deposit at time of reservation (Cashier's Check Payable to SBRPSTC, MasterCard, Visa). Agency billing may also be arranged. Financial aid and VA benefits may be available. All fees subject to change.

Cancellation / Refund Policy

Out of consideration for people who are on a waiting list please cancel your reservation no later than 21 days prior to first day of class. After the 21-day cancellation period, students will forfeit $50. Substitutions or transfer of registration to another (qualified public safety) member is permitted.

Course Cancellation

Each class has a minimum enrollment requirement. If the minimum enrollment is not reached for the course three weeks before the class begins, the class will be cancelled, and deposits will be refunded in full.

Tuition fee increases made at anytime by the State Chancellor's office may require collection of additional fees from students. Out of State or Non-Affiliated students who have not lived in California for at least one (1) year and one (1) day prior to state of college semester are subject to "out of state" college registration fees in addition to the fees listed above. This program is presented through the South Bay Regional Public Safety Training Consortium of Community Colleges (SBRPSTC), which includes Evergreen Valley College, Gavilan College, Monterey Peninsula College, Ohlone College, DeAnza College, Hartnell College and the College of San Mateo. Courses and programs presented for college credit will be funded, transcript and certified through one of these accredited institutions.
