Corrections Overview


A correctional officer is an entry level State civil service peace officer with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.  The adult and juvenile correction officers are responsible for ensuring a safe, secure and humane environment for those persons who have been legally incarcerated in city and county facilities while also ensuring adequate safety for staff and the public.

Adult correction officers are required to complete an Adult Correction Officer Core course as mandated by the Corrections Standards Authority" (CSA) of the California Board of Corrections.  Most counties in The Academy's training region require the following from prospective Adult Correctional Officers:

  • A highs school diploma (college units preferred)
  • A  passing score on a department/agency required entrance exam
  • The successful completion of the employing agency's interview process
  • The successful completion of the employing agency's agility testing
  • A comprehensive background Investigation

Most counties in The Academy's training region require the following from prospective juvenile correction officers:

  • An associates degree or completion of 60 college units
  • A passing score on the Juvenile Corrections Officer Examination
  • The successful completion of the employing agency's interview process
  • The ability to pass a comprehensive background investigation
